Homeopathy
Developed by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the early 1800s, homeopathy uses the principle of "Like cures like." Symptoms are seen as the body's attempt to overcome an illness, and that reaction is stimulated rather than suppressed by giving minuscule amounts of substances that in larger doses would cause the same signs. For example, a dog with car sickness might be given a homeopathic dilution of ipecac, which is used in concentrated form to induce vomiting.

Many homeopaths feel that their methods should not be combined with traditional medicine or even with such alternative therapies as acupuncture. Other therapies are felt to alter the animal's natural responses to illness or to set up conflicting energy flows.

The Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy trains and certifies veterinary homeopaths. If you're considering homeopathic remedies for your dog, you may want to read the Academy's Standards of Practice and Purpose, which are published on its website. The site also provides a directory of homeopathic practitioners.
