Houseplants
Don't assume that any plant is okay for a dog to eat. After all, even plants that are not defined as toxic, such as green grass, can still cause vomiting, hives, or other problems. Some of the most toxic and potentially fatal plants are sago palm, castor bean plant, rosary plant, Chinese lantern, ornamental pepper, azalea, rhododendron, and yew. Dumb cane (dieffenbachia), philodendron, caladium, and begonias can cause swelling and hives in the mouth and throat. Bulbs (tulip, amaryllis, crocus, daffodil, and so on) can cause GI irritation. Though they're not usually deadly, mistletoe and poinsettias can make animals sick. Keep all houseplants out of your dog's reach, and know what plants you have—their scientific as well as common names—just in case your dog manages to snack on one. That way your vet will be able to tell you whether the amount your dog has eaten is likely to cause any problems.
