camp unleashed
It's a re-energizing three-day rustic retreat on 1,350 acres in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts where city dogs and humans can unleash their true canine spirit.
150 miles north of New York City (about 2.5 hours by car)
From New York City: Take NY Route 9A North (about 13 miles from downtown Manhattan). Take Exit 4 (Hutchinson Parkway Exit). Merge onto Cross County Parkway. After 4.6 miles Cross County Parkway E becomes Hutchinson River Parkway N (8 miles). Take I-684 N towards Brewster (28.2 miles). Merge onto I-84 E towards Danbury/Waterbury (34.4 miles). Take Exit 20 (Left Exit). Merge onto CT Route 8 North and travel past Torrington and through Winsted (52.5 miles). Just after the town of Otis, MA (and the chicken farm), look for Werden Rd. on the Right (1.3 miles). Turn Right from Werden Road onto US Route 20 E. Follow US Route 20 East (3.6 miles). Turn Left following MA Route 8 at Bonnyrigg Campground, and follow for 1.5 miles. Turn Left onto YMCA Rd. (0.3 miles). Veer Right for Camp Becket.
Off-leash hiking through the woods, swimming in a spring-fed lake, and lounging under trees. As well, for dogs of all ages and abilities, there are tons of activities (overseen by professional dog counselors), including flyball, musical freestyle, and agility.
Classic summer camp activities, including arts & crafts, swimming, hiking, and socializing. Apart from the many activities for dogs (see above), there are also workshops for humans on such subjects as practical grooming, clicker training, positive approaches to behavior challenges, canine massage, and dog portraiture. Campers stay in simple wooden cabins with their dogs. Each cabin has two semi-private rooms and accommodates up to three people (but if you pay extra, you can guarantee you'll get a single or a double). As Camp Unleashed's website notes: "The cabins aren't very chic, but they're clean and spacious with large screened windows and high ceilings…Each group of cabins has its own wash house with private toilets and shower stalls, sinks, electrical outlets, lights and hot and cold running water." If you really want to rough it, you can bring your own tent. There's also the option of staying off-site at a dog-friendly inn.
An old-fashioned camp experience on 1,350 acres of woodland. A lovely spring-fed lake, and a sandy beach. Campfires. Activities. Three healthy human meals a day, plus plenty of snacks.
Dog food. Your own sleeping pillow and blanket (fresh linens and towels will be provided). Your own (air) mattress, if you have a sensitive back. A portable cooler, if you want to keep your own snacks and beverages.
Dogs must be at least three months old, vaccinated for rabies, healthy, free of ticks or fleas or lice, and well socialized. Humans must be at least 18 years of age. No more than two dogs per camper. Campers must be on continuous poop patrol. Dogs must be leashed in some areas. Smoking is not allowed indoors.
Depending on the number of people you share a cabin with, rates range from $499 to $650 per person, for 2 nights. All activities, meals, snacks, and workshops are included.
