Pet Food Safety • Pier 84 Pet Parade + Other Events • News

Dear Urbanhounders,

Joining us this month as guest editor is Marion Nestle, professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University and author of the James Beard Award-winning Food Politics and the indispensable What to Eat.

My new book, Pet Food Politics: The Chihuahua in the Coal Mine, is just out. In it, I tell the astonishing story of the 2007 pet food recalls and their consequences. The story began when a previously unknown Canadian company, Menu Foods, called back 60 million cans and pouches of pet foods because something in them--later discovered to be wheat flour laced with melamine in China--was causing acute kidney disease in cats and dogs.

The recalls exposed huge weaknesses in global food safety systems. They demonstrated that pet foods are just one part of a tightly linked system of food production, distribution, and consumption that involves farm animals as well as people, both here and abroad.

What started out as a "mere" problem for "a few" cats and dogs ended up as an international crisis. Most recently, melamine has shown up in Chinese infant formula. What will be next? And what can you do to protect yourself and your pets?

You can start by advocating for better safety and labeling policies—including regulations, inspections, and enforcement—for pet foods. Ask pet food companies where they source their ingredients. Demand that they test for contaminants. Stay informed about recalls. And tell your congressional representatives to enact better food regulations for pets as well as people.

If policies work for pet foods, they will work for people food too.

With best wishes to you and your hounds,

Marion Nestle

Feeling Political? Elections are always a good time to raise issues that might otherwise get placed on the back burner. As part of its overall mission to raise awareness of cruelty to animals, the ASPCA has set up a special website, CatvsDog.org, in which two characters -- Mittens the Cat and Rowdy the Dog -- debate issues of animal cruelty, including Puppy Mills and Violence toward Animals. Users of the site are encouraged to sign a pledge against animal cruelty and can take a "presidential pets" quiz.

The UK Leads the Way to Better Breeding. The Kennel Club, which runs the Crufts dog show (the world's largest), announced this week the launch of a comprehensive review of breeding standards for the UK, aimed at ensuring that the genetic health of each breed is not compromised in the pursuit of aesthetic perfection in the show ring. The commitment comes on the heels of a damning BBC documentary on pedigree dog breeding and last month's decision by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to withdraw from Crufts, citing what it called "morally unjustifiable" breeding practices. Kennel Club Secretary Caroline Kisko acknowledges the "groundswell of public attention" the issue has received and says, "We have been listening and agree with the general public’s view that more needs to be done."

What's On. Animal Planet premiered a new show, "K9 Cops", following the St. Paul (Minn.) Police Department's canine unit. New episodes air on Wednesdays at 10 PM eastern time. And Victoria Stillwell brings her dog-training tips to America in a U.S. version of "It's Me or The Dog", which begins airing Friday, Oct. 24 at 8 PM.
